Thanks to the IT revolution, every time, I travel between Bangalore and Chennai, the person sitting next to me is invariably from the IT industry. Recently I was travelling from Bangaloe to Chennai and no surprise, the girl sitting next to me was from a leading IT Company. The icebreaker, as usual, was the curiosity to know the arrival time at Chennai. That is how our conversation started. During my brief introduction, when I said I am a Vigialnce professional, the girl gave me a big jolt (I had such jolts earlier also, particularly from the youth of this generation) by asking me 'what is vigilance?'. Before I tried to explain, I asked her, being a person working in the Corporate world what she knew about Corporate Governance? She was once again puzzled the same way, as she did for 'Vigilance'. Nevertheless, I took the opportunity and gave an exclusive Lecture to her on 'Vigilance' and 'Corporate Governance'. I was not very sure whether she understood anything out of my discourse. But one thing, we both realised that almost one fourth of our journey time had passed by without realising it. A good relief indeed!
A few days passed by. The IT World has literally been shaken, like the big bang. The news of Satyam megascam started hitting the headlines. And, that was the time, I received the phone call from the IT Girl, who had the (mis)fortune of traveling with me and listened to my discourse on Corporate Governance and Vigilance. I was surprised to hear from her when she said, "Sir, now I have understood what is Corporate Governance, after the Satyam scam!". What a great feeling it was? The feeling of a satisfied master who could teach something to a student and the student confirming the learning!. .
It is in this context, I prefer to post my articles on Corporate Governance, published years ago. Here I start with two articles, the first one published in the year 2001 and the second one in 2008 in the Vigilance Professionals, a Journal published from Hyderabad. This is to reietrate the fact that these articles are relevant as long as the Corporates exist. (Please click the link below to read on)
(i) Vigilance - The right operating system for good corporate governance ( 2001)
(ii) Corporate Governance - a new sloka of the old mantra (2008)
No doubt, the time has come now to integrate Vigilance with Corporate Governance. The above two articles only confirm this very essential and fundamental approach to the issue of Corporate Governance.
